The New Chess Set
The New Chess Set
•
Chess is one of the oldest games known to humanity and, over the centuries, it has taken on multiple forms and interpretations. In 1849, the Staunton set, designed by Nathaniel Cook and promoted by Howard Staunton, became the international standard, establishing proportions and figures that still define competitive practice today.
At present, various manufacturers produce variations of this model, with the House of Staunton being one of the most recognised in the contemporary landscape, particularly in official contexts of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs.
This project proposes a reinterpretation of the figurative pieces of the Staunton set, refining them into an essential geometric language. The aim is to transform the classical iconography of chess into a more abstract and contemporary formal system, preserving the functional legibility of the pieces while exploring a new formal expression.
